Is The Chosen Biblically Accurate? – The Series vs. the Bible

The Chosen has inspired many viewers to take a new interest in Jesus – Yeshua –, His disciples, and the world of the New Testament. But one question comes up again and again:

Is The Chosen biblically accurate? Which scenes actually come from the Bible, and which parts were created for the series?

The short answer is: The Chosen is based on many biblical people, events, and teachings, but it is not a word-for-word adaptation of the Gospels. Some conversations, personal backgrounds, relationships, and scenes have been developed for dramatic storytelling.

At Beit Or Ha'Chaim, we believe it is helpful to distinguish between three things:

the biblical text, the historical Jewish context, and artistic interpretation.

What in The Chosen comes from the Bible?

Many central characters in The Chosen come directly from the New Testament, including:

Jesus – Yeshua –, Peter, Matthew, Mary Magdalene, Nicodemus, John the Baptist, and the disciples.

Many important events and teachings shown in the series are also based on the Gospels.

However, the Bible does not describe every conversation or every moment in the lives of these people. A television series therefore fills some of these gaps with imagined dialogue and additional storylines.

This means that a scene may fit the biblical world without actually appearing in the biblical text.

The Jewish background of The Chosen

One of the most interesting aspects of The Chosen is its portrayal of the Jewish world of Jesus.

Jesus – Yeshua – was Jewish and lived within the history and religious life of Israel. This is why viewers encounter subjects such as:

Shabbat · synagogue · Torah · Jewish prayer · blessings · Passover · biblical festivals · Pharisees · rabbis · ritual purity · Jerusalem · Israel

Understanding this background can make many passages in the New Testament easier to understand.

Jesus and His first disciples did not live outside Judaism. Their language, Scriptures, festivals, customs, and religious discussions were deeply connected to the Jewish world of the first century.

What was added to The Chosen?

The Gospels do not record every detail of each person's life. The Chosen therefore uses creative storytelling to build characters and connect events.

This can include:

  • additional conversations

  • personal backstories

  • relationships between characters

  • character development

  • changes in chronology

  • scenes that are not described in Scripture

It is therefore useful to distinguish between:

Biblically recorded – something explicitly found in Scripture.

Historically plausible – something that may fit the historical or Jewish setting but is not directly recorded in the Bible.

Artistically created – material developed specifically for the television series.

Is the Jewish portrayal of Jesus accurate?

The Jewish identity of Jesus is not an invention of The Chosen.

Jesus – Yeshua – belonged to the Jewish people, lived in the land of Israel, knew the Scriptures, participated in Jewish religious life, and interacted with different Jewish groups of His time.

This Jewish background is essential for understanding the Gospels.

At Beit Or Ha'Chaim, we therefore study Yeshua in connection with Israel, Torah, Shabbat, the biblical festivals, Hebrew concepts, and the historical world of the Bible.

The Chosen and the Pharisees

The portrayal of the Pharisees is another subject that raises many questions.

The Pharisees were an important Jewish movement during the period of the New Testament. They should not be treated as though every Pharisee believed or behaved in exactly the same way.

The Gospels record both disagreements and conversations between Jesus and individual Pharisees.

Understanding the historical setting helps us avoid oversimplifying the Jewish world of Jesus.

Can The Chosen help people understand the Bible?

The Chosen can be a valuable starting point.

A powerful scene may encourage someone to open the Bible and ask:

Where is this found in Scripture? What does the biblical text actually say? What is the Jewish background of this event?

That is where entertainment can become genuine Bible study.

But a television series should never replace the biblical text itself.

Watch the series – discover the Bible

At Beit Or Ha'Chaim, we encourage people to go beyond the screen.

Whether you are Catholic, Protestant, Orthodox, Evangelical, Messianic, part of a Free Church, or simply interested in the Bible, you are welcome to explore Scripture and its Jewish and historical background.

The Chosen may awaken curiosity. The Bible remains the foundation.

Beit Or Ha'Chaim – Understand the Bible. Discover its Jewish roots. Meet Yeshua in His original context.
