HOUSE OF DAVID
The Series, King David, and the Biblical Background
House of David tells the story of David, King Saul, Samuel, Jonathan, and the early monarchy of Israel. Many viewers know individual scenes such as David and Goliath, but the biblical story is much broader and more complex.
At Beit Or Ha'Chaim, we look at the series in connection with the Bible, the history of Israel, and its Jewish background. We explore which people and events are directly based on the biblical text and where a modern series adds extra scenes, dialogue, or dramatic elements.
WHO WAS DAVID?
The Bible first describes David as a young shepherd who later becomes king over Israel. His story brings together faith, courage, political conflict, friendship, failure, repentance, and responsibility.
A large part of his story can be found in 1 Samuel and 2 Samuel.
DAVID AND GOLIATH
The encounter between David and Goliath is one of the best-known stories in the Bible.
The account tells of the young David facing the Philistine Goliath while placing his trust in God. The story later became one of the most famous images of a struggle between seemingly unequal opponents.
KING SAUL
Saul was the first king of Israel. His story is closely connected with David.
The Bible describes how their relationship increasingly deteriorates and how David eventually has to flee from Saul. To better understand House of David, it is therefore important to also know the story of Saul.
SAMUEL THE PROPHET
Samuel plays a central role in Israel's transition to monarchy.
He first anoints Saul and later David. His story connects the period of the Judges with the beginning of the Israelite monarchy.
JONATHAN AND DAVID
Jonathan, the son of Saul, is described in the Bible as a close friend of David.
Their relationship stands in strong contrast to the conflict between David and Saul and has become one of the best-known stories of friendship in the Bible.
HOUSE OF DAVID: THE SERIES AND THE BIBLE
As with any historical series, it is helpful to distinguish between:
Biblical account – what is actually written in the biblical text.
Historical background – what we know about the time period and its culture.
Creative interpretation – scenes, dialogue, and character development added for the series.
At Beit Or Ha'Chaim, we want to help distinguish between these different levels while also encouraging people to explore the Bible itself.
Watch House of David. Understand David's story. Discover the Bible for yourself.
FROM SHEPHERD TO KING – WHO WAS DAVID?
David does not begin his story as a powerful ruler, but as a young shepherd from Bethlehem. While his older brothers initially stand in the foreground, it is David whom the prophet Samuel anoints as the future king.
His journey takes him from shepherd boy to the battle with Goliath, service at the court of King Saul, and eventually to becoming king of Israel. Yet this path is marked by conflict, persecution, friendship, faith, personal failure, and repentance.
David therefore becomes one of the most important figures in the Bible. His story is also connected with the hope of an enduring Davidic royal line.
DAVID AND THE MESSIAH – “SON OF DAVID”
David's significance in the Bible extends far beyond his own reign. God gives David a special promise concerning the future of his royal house. This promise later becomes an important part of messianic expectation.
In the New Testament, the title “Son of David” therefore appears as a messianic title. Jesus – Yeshua – is connected there with David and his royal line.
Understanding the story of King David also helps explain why terms such as Messiah, Son of David, Kingdom, and Jerusalem play such an important role in the New Testament.
